Innovation through knowledge: to be faithful to our business card, we have set up the Innovation & Research department within our technical structure, thanks to which we are able to carry out projects that are always at the cutting edge of the most advanced technologies.

In this scenario are placed the projects that have recently received the recognition of “projects of Research & Innovation” by the Lazio Region within the framework of the POR FESR LAZIO 2014 – 2020 programme – Integrated projects relating to the “Investment for growth and employment” objective.

Intelligent system for passenger profile and screening investigation

On 28/12/2017 Lazio Region approved a grant for the research project “Intelligent system for passenger profile and screening investigation” in line with the issue of airport security in accordance with the Passenger Name Record (PNR) directive implemented by the LIBE Commission (civil liberties) of the European Parliament on July 15 2016

The objective of the project is to create an intelligent pre-screening system based on BIG DATA architectures for the control of air transport passengers with the aim of increasing the levels of anti-terrorism security.

The system will be based on what is known as a Passenger Name Record, often abbreviated to PNR.

PNRs are compiled by travel agencies, air carriers and tour operators, and contain information such as medical conditions and disabilities, meal preferences, means of payment, but also work address, email address, IP address if booking online and the personal information of emergency contacts.

This information is stored in a BIG DATA (Hadoop) architecture that is able to analyze it through Machine Learning algorithms using suitably engineered behavioural models that analyze PNR with data archives, black-lists made available by government agencies and Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) available on the internet (websites, blogs, social networks, media, search engines, etc.).

This processing, made reliable and efficient thanks to the distributed computing architecture characteristic of the Hadoop architecture, allows a terrorism “risk score” to be assigned to the person in real time.

The results of the project are the research and development of a prototype platform that is able to support the operators assigned to the control of an airport site in identifying – in real time – people classed as having a degree of risk based on the score calculated through Machine Learning algorithms.

The project was awarded a grant of a non-repayable sum of 252,831.77 euros from the resources of the Public Notice “AEROSPACE AND SAFETY” – POR FESR LAZIO 2014-2010 (www.europa.eu).

Intelligent Augmented Reality to support psychotherapy

On 28/12/2017 Lazio Region approved a grant for our research project “Intelligent Augmented Reality to support psychotherapy” concerning support for a series of behavioural and cognitive psychotherapy treatments.

The project aims to create a platform that has as its fruition tool “Augmented Reality” through the use of Microsoft Hololens glasses, able, through artificial intelligence algorithms, to modulate the environment or the various functionalities based on the patient’s mood and their tastes. Using video analysis algorithms, which analyze the surrounding environment, in combination with the actions that the patient performs, the Machine Learning algorithms will be able to modulate images and various functionalities by increasing cognitive interactions.

The aim of the project is the development of a platform that is able to support a series of behavioural and cognitive psychotherapy treatments.

In the experimental phase, it will be developed and configured to support palliative therapies for invasive diseases in adolescent patients. The idea is to make a hospital, or any place of hospitalization, a “magical world” for young patients through the use of a glasses device that, through Augmented Reality, transforms an impersonal and sad world for children into a fun place with colours, animals and pictures, based on the mood of the patient, gender, while also taking personal tastes into consideration.

All this will give the young patients the chance to ‘fly’ with their imagination, detaching themselves from the reality of a hospital and the problem they are experiencing. In addition, the environment will be enhanced with interactive and educational games to guide and explain what is happening, leading to the possibility of seeing a cartoon that interacts with the environment.

The results of the project are the research and development of a prototype platform that is able to support a series of behavioural and cognitive psychotherapy treatments, through:

  • Augmented Reality
  • Behavioural and cognitive analysis systems based on Machine Learning
  • Video analysis systems, to increase interaction with the environment

The project was awarded a grant of a non-repayable sum of 329,592.18 euros from the resources of the Public Notice “LIFE 2020” – POR FESR LAZIO 2014-2010 (www.europa.eu).

Big Data: Advanced Analysis

We have engineered a solution to integrate data from all the sources, types and sizes available.

Turning unstructured data – videos, images, text and on-line content – into accessible data.

From the integration of proprietary methodologies and solutions, comes the possibility to tackle Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) issues for the development of “intelligence”; the solution allows “open source” terms to be extended through the collection of information from new public sources.

Our solution is a machine learning system, usable as an investigation tool (OSINT): It allows a series of algorithms to be used:

  • Topic detection.
  • Survey of the topic handled by a text.
  • Sentiment analysis.
  • Survey of the judgement, positive or negative, expressed by a text regarding a given topic (sentiment analysis).
  • Reputation analysis.
  • Content suggestion.
  • Information & relation extraction.
    • Survey of predefined entities within a text (information extraction) and, possibly, of the logical relations between them (relation extraction).
