Civil Aviation – CPDLC Communications Security Testing

Use Case
Cyber security

The Challenge

As part of the European SESAR program, the goal was to assess the cybersecurity of the CPDLC communication protocol used in air traffic control. Until then, efforts had been limited to theoretical analyses, as the technical capabilities to simulate real-world attacks in such a critical and highly regulated environment were lacking.

The Solution

The HUMANATIVA team developed innovative tools to test the protocol in the field, conducting a practical demonstration of a Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) attack at Ciampino Airport. This operation demonstrated for the first time the feasibility of real-world threats to air traffic communications, moving the security debate beyond theory.

The Benefits

The research has provided key empirical evidence for improving the design of future air traffic management systems in Europe. The findings have been published in academic journals, contributing to global civil aviation safety and passenger protection.

Humanativa’s role

HUMANATIVA has played a pioneering role, introducing the culture of simulated attacks into a highly specialized sector. Its ability to translate theoretical research into successful practical demonstrations underscores the Group’s excellence in innovation and the protection of international strategic assets.
